The Special Session culminated in the official adoptionof its outcome document, 'A World Fit for Children'. The new agenda for - and with - the world's children, including 21 specific goals and targets for the next decade. More than two years of consensus-building resulted in a strong future agenda focused on four key priorities: promoting healthy lives; providing quality education for all; protecting children against abuse, exploitation and violence; and combating HIV/AIDS.

Convinced that the appalling situation faced by many child soldiers should no longer be tolerated by the international community, leading non-governmental organizations (NGOs) - the African Coalition to Stop the Use of Child Soldiers, Amnesty International, Defence for Children International, Human Rights Watch, International Federation Terre des Hommes, the International Save the Children Alliance, the Jesuit Refugee Service, the Latin American Coalition to Stop the Use of Child Soldiers, and the Quaker United Nations Office (Geneva), and World Vision International - are heading the Coalition to Stop the Use of Child Soldiers. The Coalition's primary objectives are (1) the adoption of, and adherence to, an Optional Protocol to the Convention on the Rights of the Child prohibiting the military recruitment and use in hostilities of any person younger than 18 years of age, and (2) the recognition and enforcement of this standard by all armed forces, both governmental and non-governmental.

Another 9 countries have signed but have not yet completed their ratification process, bringing the total number of countries supporting the treaty to 150. 44 Countries have not yet joined the treaty.

Oxfam, Amnesty and Ploughshares Join Forces
The long-standing efforts of a global network of non-governmental organizations seeking greater controls on the international arms trade was given a boost on Thursday (Oct 9th) with the launch of a campaign, Control Arms, and a report, ‘Shattered Lives: The Case for Tough International Arms Controls' , by Amnesty International, Oxfam International, and the International Action Network on Small Arms (IANSA). The three-year program seeks government support for an International Arms Trade Treaty (ATT) to control the supply of weapons and also calls on governments to provide community-level safety to reduce the demand for arms. Here in Canada Project Ploughshares, a co-founder and current member of IANSA, along with Oxfam Canada and Amnesty International Canada issued a press release in response to and in support of the report and a background document outlining the issue and with specific reference to Canada's role.
